KAYAMKULAM POWER PLANT

The Kayamkulam Thermal Power Plant, also known as the Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant, is a 350 MW power station in Kayamkulam, Kerala. It was established by NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) and was initially designed to use naphtha as fuel. Due to rising production costs associated with naphtha, the plant shifted to LNG (liquefied natural gas). However, transportation issues with LNG led to the plant being largely idle for several years. The plant is currently exploring the use of methanol as a fuel source.

Key Details:

  • Location: Choolatheruvu, Kayamkulam, Alappuzha district, Kerala.
  • Capacity: 350 MW.
  • Operator: NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation).
  • Initial Fuel: Naphtha.
  • Current Status: The plant is exploring the use of methanol as fuel, as it has been largely idle due to high production costs associated with naphtha and transportation issues with LNG.
  • History: Established in 1998-1999.
  • Previous Issues: High production costs due to naphtha and difficulties in transporting LNG.
  • Future Potential: Methanol-based power generation is being explored.
